Here’s how to keep your new, custom mirrors looking their best!

A beautiful custom mirror can make a room feel brighter, larger, and more polished. Whether it’s a statement mirror in a luxury bathroom, a full-wall vanity mirror, or a custom-cut mirror incorporated into your home’s design, proper care helps protect its appearance and extend its life.

At Christian Glass & Mirror, we create custom-cut glass and mirror solutions for homes throughout St. Pete and Tampa Bay. Here are some simple tips for keeping your new mirrors looking their best.

Custom Glass Maintenance Checklist

  • Use the right cleaning solution – think: mild soap
  • Opt for a microfiber cloth, not any abrasive materials
  • Watch the edges!
  • Keep your new mirrors dry and clean
  • We care about your glass; make sure to follow the steps our professional installers tell you.

1. Use the Right Cleaning Solution

For routine cleaning, you don’t need harsh chemicals. A quality glass cleaner or a simple mixture of water and a small amount of mild dish soap can effectively remove fingerprints, dust and everyday buildup.

Apply your cleaner to a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth rather than spraying large amounts directly onto the mirror. This helps prevent moisture from collecting around the edges, where prolonged exposure can potentially damage the mirror backing.

2. Avoid Abrasive Materials

Your custom-cut mirror may be durable, but abrasive cleaning tools can leave scratches or damage the surface. Again, a clean microfiber cloth is usually all you need for a streak-free finish!

You’ll want to avoid:

  • Rough sponges or scouring pads
  • Abrasive powders
  • Steel wool
  • Paper towels that leave behind fibers
  • Harsh chemicals not intended for glass or mirrors

3. Be Careful Around the Edges

Custom mirrors can include unique shapes, beveled edges, decorative details, or specialty finishes. The edges of a mirror deserve special attention. When cleaning, avoid allowing excessive moisture to sit along the perimeter or seep behind the mirror.

Instead of saturating the surface, lightly mist your cleaning cloth and wipe the mirror. Follow with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any remaining moisture.

If your mirror has a distinctive treatment or feature, follow any care instructions provided by your glass professional. And if you’re unsure about how to clean a particular custom installation, it’s always better to ask before experimenting with a new product.

4. Keep Bathroom Mirrors Dry

Bathroom mirrors naturally encounter more moisture than mirrors elsewhere in the home.

Good ventilation can help prolong the life of your new mirrors. Use your bathroom exhaust fan during and after showers to reduce humidity and condensation. If your mirror becomes heavily fogged, allow it to dry rather than repeatedly wiping it with a wet towel.

Keeping the surrounding environment drier can help preserve both the mirror and the finishes around it.

5. Clean Regularly

Don’t wait until your mirror has a noticeable buildup! Frequent, gentle cleaning is easier on the surface than occasional aggressive scrubbing.

For most residential mirrors, a quick weekly cleaning is enough to keep fingerprints, dust and water spots under control. High-use bathroom mirrors may need attention more frequently.

Custom Mirrors Deserve Custom Care

A custom mirror is more than a functional piece—it’s reflective of your home’s design. Proper maintenance can help preserve the clarity, beauty and finished appearance that made you choose custom glass in the first place.
